Kimberly Cunningham with CERT team in the Bronx

By day, Kimberly Cunningham is AIG’s Senior Business Continuity Analyst. By night — and almost every weekend — she is a hero to many, using her professional skills to serve the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in the Bronx, New York.

The CERT program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area, and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire-life safety, fire suppression, light search and rescue and disaster medical operations.

Since 2011, Kimberly has been dedicating approximately 20 hours each week to CERT, and the projects she has served are numerous and newsworthy.  She has helped track evacuated nursing home patients following Hurricane Irene, provided logistical support and donations management assistance beside multiple New York City agencies and nonprofits following building collapses, and  assisted in managing donated resources to be sent from New York City to Puerto Rico in the days following Hurricane Maria.

More recently, Kimberly used AIG’s Volunteer Time Off program to manage the Bronx Health & Safety Fair where multiple New York City agencies that support disaster response provided free disaster preparedness information in the Tremont section of the Bronx. She also worked alongside the N.Y. Fire Department and the American Red Cross to install free smoke detectors in Bronx homes.

“My day-to-day volunteerism entails everything from community recruitment, developing and sharing emergency preparedness information, aligning teams with locations and needs, in addition to managing individuals who want to help,” says Kimberly.  “It’s rewarding to see the Bronx come together as a community, and my favorite part is knowing that I am one individual who is truly making the difference in the lives of my neighbors in need.”

Thanks to Kimberly’s business continuity work at AIG, a client recently wrote to say, “My laptop has been equipped with every program I need to successfully do my job off site if needed.  I have been able to take phone calls, answer emails and conduct sales all with no interruptions. I feel that AIG takes commitment to our customers very seriously, and they are to be applauded for making sure our service to them is consistent and dependable.”

This project is supported by AIG’s volunteer programme.
